In our November 3rd Podcast, we discussed the benefits of eating mussels for children.

Some of the benefits discussed are found in Parenting Healthy Babies website. Similar benefits are found in Health Fitness Revolution as well as:

There are several species for mussels, and the following are the most common:

Chilean Mussels (Mytilus chilensis)

Mediterranean Mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis)

Green-lipped New Zealand Mussels (Perna canaliculus)

Blue Mussels (Mytilus edulis)- Also known as the common mussel. You may have also heard of Prince Edward Island Mussels (P.E.I.) which are blue mussels grown in this area in Canada.

Mussels are available wild or farmed raised. The farm method mentioned in the podcast is off-bottom ropes. Off-bottom basically means that the ropes are suspended in the ocean with buoys and do not touch the bottom sea floor. This fantastic article reviews other off-bottom and bottom culture methods that are used depending on the geographic location needs.

Always Choose Sustainable Mussels.

There are several certified options. Look for Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) eco-labels.

Off-bottom and bottom culture farm raised mussels are Green Rated Best Choice by Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program
