Fair Trade USA has hired sustainability advocate and Seafood Ninja founder Adriana Sánchez as its new seafood business development manager, the nonprofit certifier announced on 9 March.

Through her new role, Sánchez – who most recently served for over seven years as the sustainability director for Florida-based seafood supplier Sea Delight – will help to increase the positive impact Fair Trade certification, products, and policies have on fishermen, fish farmers, and the environment, the organization said.

“Adriana has extensive knowledge of seafood supply chains and is a strong advocate for seafood sustainability and pre-competitive collaboration within the industry,” said Julie Kuchepatov, director of seafood at Fair Trade USA, in a press release.

Sánchez joins Fair Trade USA during a time of impressive mobility and change in seafood, when “the  industry is not only addressing the environmental sustainability and traceability of seafood, but becoming more and more active in addressing social responsibility in their supply chains,” she said. As such, Sánchez looks forward to sharing Fair Trade’s mission now, as sustainability efforts in seafood continues to pick up steam.

“I am thrilled to join the Fair Trade USA seafood team,” Sánchez said. “Fair Trade certification is an effective tool to further connect environmental sustainability and social responsibility to consumers while leveraging existing brand recognition.”

Headquartered in Oakland, California, Fair Trade USA is a nonprofit organization that promotes sustainable livelihoods for farmers and workers, protects fragile ecosystems, and builds strong, transparent supply chains through independent, third-party certification.
